Ried Tanzer
This premium red wine site is characterised by clay-loess soil bedded on a mighty layer of Primary rock (Gföhl Gneiss). The vineyard is situated on a slight elevation, which makes it very airy and the grapes stay healthy in the vineyard until late in autumn. As a result the vines yield a powerful, terroir influenced wine with a strong mineral note and distinctive variety and vintage character.
The wine-making
Only the very best and healthiest grapes are harvested fully ripe in various rounds in mid October, cold soaked, and then slowly fermented for fourteen days at a temperature of about 28°C. During fermentation the mash is flooded with the must twice a day so that a maximum of fruit, colour and delicate tannin is extracted. After the gentle extraction of the juice malolactic fermentation takes place. The young wine is allowed to mature for many months in new 300-litre barriques made from Allier oak. This maturation takes place in the ideal environment of the 700 year-old natural cellar at a constant temperature of 11° C 14 metres below the ground. Prior to bottling the wine is assembled in large oak barrels in order to achieve maturity after several months in the bottles.
