Ried Spiegel
This southerly-exposed site with a generous layer of humus underlaid with loess is very nutrient-rich. The profound soils allow the roots to grow long and deep, thereby allowing the vines to survive long dry periods without damage. They obtain their nutrients and minerals from different soil layers. Our most concentrated and complex Grüner Veltliner thrives here due to the type of soil. As the grapes absorb the components and expression of the terroir, they give wines of the highest aromatic concentration and complexity. Our red wines also come from this medium heavy soil; here, they obtain their deep, warm aroma and finesse.
The wine-making
The harvest takes place in the last week of October and the first week of November, with yields barely reaching 23hl/ha. The grapes are carefully put into small crates, then destemmed, crushed and cold soaked for several hours. The fermentation and maturation of our most powerful Veltliner takes place in 2/3 stainless steel tanks resp. 1/3 in new 300-liter casks made from Allier oak where they rest for six months after fermentation. This wine is bottled in early summer of the year following the harvest and then aged in bottle for several month.
Ageing potential: until 2024
food accompany: a wine for meditation.
