Chardonnay Ladner Reserve 2006
The wine
The Ladner vineyard produces distinct, terroir-driven Chardonnays. Our Reserve-Chardonnay is made exclusively from the best and ripest grapes from this vineyard. It is an expressive, complex wine with good depth; powerful and delicate at the same time, it shows a wide range of aromas backed by subtle oak flavors a wine with great ageing potential.
alcohol by vol: 14%, acidity 4,4‰, residual sugar 5,5 g/l
Ried Ladner
A wide range of soil types prevail in this area: partly sand, partly clayey, cohesive loam as well as slate pockets (Gföhl Gneiss) that almost reach the surface. This cohesive soil allows for optimal water storage and guarantees a sufficient water supply during the vegetation period.
The hollow-like area, which protects from storm and wind, yields a special microclimate that warms the vineyards. The high potassium-content in the soil leads to concentrated wines with fine spiciness, such as especially terroir-driven Chardonnays.
The wine-making
The ripest and most concentrated grapes were very carefully hand-picked at the end of October, with yields barely reaching 25hl/ha. The unscathed grapes were carefully transferred to the press house in small crates where they were destemmed, crushed and cold soaked for several hours. Thereafter the juice is carefully extracted. The cleared free-run juice was then fermented in new French 300-liter casks made from Allier-oak where malolactic fermentation also took place. These casks also housed the wine for the subsequent maturation period of 12 months at 11° Celsius in our 700 year-old natural cellar 14 meters below ground level. This wine is bottled in the fall of the year following the harvest and then aged in bottle for several months.
Ageing potential: 2025
