Grüner Veltliner Käferberg Reserve, Erste Lage Kamptal DAC 2009
The wine
The Grüne Veltliner Käferberg is brought to life by its crystalline minerality and the coolness of the Kamptal. This Grüne Veltliner is complex and strong in character. It heavily reflects the great vintage 2007.
alcohol by vol: 13,0%, acidity 5,4‰, residual sugar 5,3 g/l
Ried Käferberg
The Ried Käferberg is marked by sparse amphibolite partly covered by clayey layers. It is sloping down towards the south. It is a breezy site on the hilltop, so that the grapes are allowed to ripen healthily and free from bortrytis until late in autumn and can thus reach their full maturity in flavour.
The wine-making
Before the absolutely healthy grapes were finally harvested in late autumn the crop from the old vines was reduced once more (approx. 3000 kg/ha). Then the mash was macerated for two days to extract the deep aromas of flesh, pips and the yellow peel. The naturally sedimented must was finally fermented in the wooden barrel from the local Manhartsberg oak with yeasts from the vineyard.
We wanted to intervene in the maturation process as little as possible, because the wine should be able to develop completely naturally in the 700 year-old natural cellar. The wine stabilized itself in spring and summer through the long maturation process on its own yeast (sur lie) and was finally bottled in August.
Ageing potential: 2020
food accompany: Being a typical crystalline Kamptal-Veltliner it is a highly flexible food companion especially for the so-called “crossover-cuisine”.
